Doubles Tournament 2010 Report

The tournament took place at Esporta, Thorpe Wood last Sunday (17/10/2010). Fifteen pairs entered, draw from a variety of league teams. The weather was again warm and sunny, although most of the matches took place inside the domes. The pairs were divided into 3 groups for a round robin stage with handicaps given depending on league status. The group winners were Alan Jordan/Ashley Martin (Esporta A), James Puttrell/Andrew Harvey (Easporta A) and Chris Pepper/Henry Fisher (Esporta C). The semi-final line-up was completed by the best runners-up, who were 10year-olds Janek Ortonowski and Maki Zivotic, who play for Esporta C. In the first semi-final Puttrell and Harvey beat Pepper and Fisher 6-2, but in the second semi the two youngsters gave Jordan and Martin a real run for their money before going down 6-4. In the final Puttrell and Harvey made youthful advantage tell and won 6-1. Esporta provided a barbeque for competitors and guests and a most enjoyable day was had.

Report on Esporta A v Spalding A 13.09.10

Esporta A claimed the league title for the third time but by the narrowest of margins. Coming into the match they needed the seven points that a win would give them to overhaul Stamford A at the top. The match had twice been postponed due to rain and with storm clouds all around and autumn leaves falling on the courts this probably represented the last chance to get the match played and great efforts were made to clear the courts. Spalding were destined to finish mid-table but were in no mood to roll over. Will Mason and Glenn Perkins won all three of their rubbers for Spalding, including the notable scalp of former GB Davis Cup player Nick Fulwood, who was playing with Ashley Martin. Dominic Leighton-Hannam and John Farrow won one for Spalding but with Fulwood and Martin winning their other two and Steve Myers and Andrew Harvey winning one the match was eventually decided by Alan Jordan and Matt Hardwick`s tie-break win against Martin Perkins and James Gregory. The whole season had come down to this one tie-break! Congratulations to Esporta on their title but respect to Spalding for putting up such a great fight.

April 2010

The Winter league has finished and Stamford A are champions with Longthorpe A runners up. Esporta won Division 2 ahead of Deeping A. The artic weather in December and January did cause some posponements, but most matches were played in the end, so well done the captains who kept phoning around to make this happen.

The Summer league is about to start and the weather is looking up. We have 32 teams this year, which divides nicely into four divisions of eight. Bourne Tennis Club have entered a team for the fist time so best wishes to them. Unfortunately we have lost City of Peterborough, but hopefully they will rejoin soon. Will Esporta make it four titles in a row, following on from the long run of success for Eastways, or will the challengers make a breakthrough this time? The next four months will decide.

Enjoy the season!
