Tournament

The tournament was held at Stamford Tennis Club on Sunday 9th September. Once again the weather smiled on us and 12 pairs entered, drawn from 8 different clubs. A handicap system operated, based on league status. Two groups of 6 were formed and the top two in each went through to the semi-finals. In the first semi Clive Moody and Ben Monti of DeepingA beat Deeping C pair Bob Oxford and Mick Soppitt 6-1 but the other semi was much closer with Alan Jordan and Andrew Harvey (Esporta/Eastways A) coming from behind to beat Rod Gill and Martin Desborough (Perkins/Thorokleen A – winter) by 6-4. The final was a keenly fought affair but Moody and Monti produced some of their best tennis to come out on top 6-2. Our thanks again to Stamford for hosting the event.

Tournament

The tournament was held at Stamford TC on Sunday 17th September in the most lovely Autumn sunshine. Thirteen pairs entered, representing 6 different clubs, the biggest contingent being from Castor & Ailsworth, with 5 pairs. The pairs were divided into 3 groups which were won by Harris and Mason of Spalding, Nicholas and Nicholas of NENS and Timson and Moody of Deeping. The best runners-up were Ingram and Ingham of Castor, from the second group. In the semi-finals the Nicholases beat Harris + Mason 6-2 and Timson+Moody beat Ingram+Ingham 6-1 In the final the division 1 handicap again proved no bar to Timson + Moody , who triumphed 6-1. Our thanks to Stamford for again hosting a successful event.

Summer League

The last match of note in the summer league was the one which decided the title. Eastways A came to Deeping A knowing that even a 5-4 defeat would give them the title. Deeping`s chances were dealt a further blow when Ben Monti was taken ill just before the match, however Edward Whitfield proved a capable deputy. The turning point came in the second round of matches when Alan Jordan and James Homan won a tie-break against Timson and Moody to give Eastways the fourth rubber they required. The match eventually finished 5-4 to Eastways, which meant that Stamford A stayed ahead of Deeping in second place by one point.

Winter League

The winter league starts on October 15th, with 19 teams divided into 3 divisions. Let`s hope that the weather stays fine!

Report W/E 02/07/06

Eastways A continued their winning ways at the top of Division 1 with a 6-3 win over their B team. Second place Deeping A surprisingly lost 6-3 at Spalding A for whom Adam Craig and Emma Tomlinson won all three rubbers.

In Division 2 Thorokleen A stay top after beating Budget Insurance 5-4 despite the efforts of Walker and Hernaman who won all three for the visitors. Perkins go second after a 6-3 win away to Stamford D. Hill and Freeman were 100% for the visitors.

In Division 3 Deeping D won a re-arranged match 7-2 against Blueflames (Formerly British Gas, then Transco, it`s hard to keep up but the name gives you a clue) and followed this up with a 5-4 success against Railway A. This latter win owed much to a two rubber haul by young players Matt Medler and Matt Fowler who were promoted from last years E-team in Division 4. This enabled Deeping D to once again rise above their C team who were thrashed 8-1 at Eastways C for whom the pairings of Watkins & Harvey and Ayton & Curren were seldom troubled. Despite fielding a depleted team Castor A were able to cement their place at the top with a 6-3 win over Railway A, Liz Berryman and Richard Ingram won all three for the leaders. Clive Evans and Lee Cameron won all three for Whittlesey A against Spalding B to maintain second place.

In Division 4 a strong March A team were too good for Deeping E at the top of the table. Rob Henshaw and Nick Mann took maximum points for the leaders. Castor B`s revival continues with a 9-0 win over Railway B and their team of Lister, Sansom, Arden, Ingle, Glavina and Ingram were able to join their A team for a joint post-match celebration, both beating Railway teams. Whittlesey B`s good form also continued as they beat Eastways D, the Cornell/Booth and Leonard/Rose partnerships both enjoying success for the former wooden-spoonists.

Hopefully the good weather will continue and with Wimbledon in full swing there`s plenty of interest in the league at the moment.

In division 3, Nens B are champions, with Stamford D runners-up - just ahead of Spalding D (1 point seperated the two).

In division 4 Eastways C are chapions, with Deeping E as runners-up.

October 2004

The summer legue was again won by Eastways A, for the 11th time in a row. Spalding B were runners up, their highest ever finish.

Stamford B are champions of division two, unfortunately their outstanding re-arranged match against Railway A could not be played due to lack of court time and un-availability of players, so railway remain in second place.

These problems also affected division 3, where two late concessions by teams in re-arranged matches allowed MArch A to equal Eastways C's points total, so the championship was tied.

Division 4 was almost entirely played out and spalding B were the winners, with Deeping D just edging out March B for 2nd place.

The tournament was played on the 19th September at Eastways (Hereward Community College) as normal we had fine weather and 21 pairs drawn from 10 different clubs took part. The handicap system allowed several; pairs from lower divisions to do well and in the final Simon Bentley and Nick Ford of March A narrowly beat Jonathan Curran and Scott Titman of Eastways C. We just had time to hand over the trophies as the caretaker arrived to lock up the courts!

The winter league is just about to start. The entry is up again. This year we have 21 teams divided into three divisions.
